At some point in the 3rd quarter a man walked into the arena wearing a very long
maroon coat and it was hard to tell who it was and why he was wearing a coat when it
was 72 degrees outside. It didn’t take long before people realized that the man wasDrake.
I know I know, this is Oklahoma City and most people think the is one of the country
music capitols of the world, even though according to wideopencountry.com metal is the
most popular music genre in the state. But, people do listen to Drake here.
For those who don’t, like the man sitting next to him who asked if he was famous when
he was shown on the jumbotron, let me introduce you to the man who had OKC going
crazy last night.
Drake, like fellow members of the Thunder Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Lu Dort, is
from Canada and he’s a pretty popular hip hop artist. He’s been extremely popular since
he put out his 3rd mixtape ‘So Far Gone’ in 2009. He was in a pretty popular show when
he was younger called ‘Degrassi’ but we don’t need to talk about that.
Since 2009, he’s been one of, if not the number one, top artists in music and since I
know more than just basketball, I’m here to answer all of your questions about the artist

What is his real name and what does Drake mean?
Drake’s real name is Aubrey Graham and but goes by Drake. According to him, Drake
stands for “Do Right and Kill Everything” as he said in his song ‘Miss Me’ that came out
in 2010.
What type of music does he make?
Drake is a very unique artists that raps and sings. He makes a mix of hip hop and R&B
music. He isn’t the first to do it but is probably the most popular.
How is someone from Canada so popular?
People from Canada can get very popular in America. Just ask Shai Gilgeous-
Alexander and Lu Dort. Or even Jim Carey, Martin Short, or Celine Dion. Drake though,
when he first wanted to become an artist, was told to live in Houston to get a feel of the
hip hop culture and that’s where the birth of Drake happened. After that, he put out his
widely popular mixtape ‘So Far Gone’ in 2009 and people immediately fell in love with
him. Also, it helped that he signed with Lil Wayne who was one of the top artists at the
time and that only helped catapult him into stardom. He also continues to make some
pretty good music.
Wait, you said he was an actor first, how did he become a
rapper?
Drake was an actor first but he was writing lyrics for songs at a young age as he always
had a passion for music. While on Degrassi his character rapped some and he released
2 mixtapes before he was kicked off the show because of his hectic schedule with his
music career. The show told him, after realizing he was juggling 2 careers, that he
needed to choose and he chose music. It was a great choice because he’s better at
making music than acting.
Does he date anyone?
I know some young lady asked this question and the answer right now seems to be a
little conflicting. He was dating reality tv star and model Johanna Leia. They have parted
ways and he’s been seen with a new lady who is unknown. He has been linked to
Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Serena Williams, Jennifer Lopez, Tyra Banks and more though.
So if you’re wanting to shoot your shot, now is probably the best chance.

Drake is a consistent chart topper so picking just a few of his songs isn’t that easy.
Some of his popular hits though include “One Dance”, “God’s Plan”, “Nice For What”,

The simple answer is he’s extremely popular. In fact, it was just announced that he’s the
4th most streamed artist in the world on Spotify and is the most streamed artist all time
on the site. In fact, even though Metal is the most listened to genre in Oklahoma, the
most popular contemporary artist in Oklahoma is Drake. Just like he’s the most popular
in 30 other states. Probably safe to say he’s the most popular artist in America right
now.

I’m glad you asked. The best way to listen to Drake in OKC is to tune into V103, 103.1
to be exact. V103 is a Tyler Media station and plays all of the old school hip hop and
R&B hits so you can not only listen to Drake, you can listen to other artists that may find
their way to OKC to watch the Thunder play.
