At number two, Oklahoma Sooners softball head coach Patty Gasso led her program to something nearly impossible to do regarding all sports. That was winning four consecutive national champions or a more popular way to phrase which is completing a four-peat.
Before 2021, Gasso led the Sooners to winning four national championships in 200, 2013, 2014, 2016, and 2017.
In 2021, Oklahoma only lost two games in the entire regular season. They displayed such dominance in the regular season that in some of the featured wins, they established 20, 21, 22, 24, 29, and 33 runs which is absurd to think about.
Losing their first game in Oklahoma City to the James Madison Dukes, the Sooners had to claw their way to the national championship from the loser bracket which meant there was no margin for error.
Defeating the Georgia Bulldogs, the UCLA Bruins, and James Madison twice, the Sooners entered the Women’s College World Series against the Florida State Seminoles.
With the format being best two out of three, Oklahoma dropped game one to the Seminoles 4-8, but their pitching and defense led the way winning games two and three to become the 2021 Women’s College World Series National Champions.
In the 2022 season, the dominance of Oklahoma continued. With the season beginning the second week of February, the Sooners did not lose a game until April 16 when they fell 4-2 against the Texas Longhorns.
In Oklahoma City, the Sooners got victories over Northwestern 13-2 and the Longhorns 7-2.
The Sooners took a loss to UCLA 7-3, but with double elimination, they avenged their loss and dominantly defeated UCLA 15-0 to advance to the Women’s College World Series.
Oklahoma achieved their second Women’s College World Series National Title after standing victorious over the Longhorns 16-1 and 10-5 in games one and two.
The Sooners finished the 2022 season with a 59-3 overall record scoring a total 579 runs and allowing 65. They also averaged 9.3 runs a game during the 2022 season.
The 2022 season for the Sooners also featured Jocelyn Alo becoming the new home run queen.
The 2023 season for the Sooners went down statistically as one of the most dominant seasons ever in all-around sports. The defense that season was one of the key reasons for their success.
The Sooners lost their first game of the season to the Baylor Bears 4-3 on Feb.18. Wildly enough, the Sooners would not lose again in that season.
At times during the 2023 season, they faced some good adversity but were able to overcome that.
In the Women’s College World Series, Oklahoma defeated Florida State in games one and two to become the first NCAA softball team ever to win three consecutive Women’s College World Series. The Sooners finished the 2023 season with a 61-1 overall record tallying 501 total runs and allowing 59 runs.
During the 2024 season, the Sooners suffered their first defeat of the season against Louisiana 7-5 in early March, but that capped off the longest winning streak at 71 consecutive wins across the 2023-24 seasons. The second-highest winning streak was at 47 set by the Arizona Wildcats in the 1996-97 seasons.
In the 2024 season, the Sooners were handed multiple losses that they hadn’t received before regarding their senior class.
For the first time, the senior class lost a couple of in-season series against the Longhorns and the Oklahoma State Cowboys.
The Sooners had to dig a little deeper for their success, and that was a challenge they were ready for.
Getting to Oklahoma City, the Sooners defeated the Duke Blue Devils 9-1 in run-rule fashion.
Oklahoma took a loss to the Florida Gators 9-3 which forced a rematch game with elimination at stake.
With a chance to advance to the Women’s College World Series, the Sooners just needed one more victory over the Gators.
Tied 5-5, in the bottom of the eighth in extra innings, Oklahoma senior Jayda Coleman delivered one of the most memorable and most clutch moments in Sooner history with a walk-off home run sending the Sooners back to the Women’s College World Series against the Longhorns.
Taking down the Longhorns in games one and two, the Sooners win the Women’s College World Series for the fourth year in a row completing the journey for a four-peat.
From 2021-2024, the Oklahoma Sooners won four consecutive National Titles. The Oklahoma seniors Rylie Boone, Nicole May, Tiare Jennings, Jayda Coleman, and Kinzie Hansen all were a part of four different national championship seasons at Oklahoma.
