Down to the Top 10! At number 10, we look at Maggie Nichols and the 2019 Oklahoma Sooners Women’s Gymnastics National Title run.
They were led by head coach K.J. Kindler and it was her 14th season under that role. Kindler led the Sooners to back-to-back national championships in 2016 and 2017.
The Sooners opened the season in Fayetteville, Arkansas facing and defeating the Arkansas Razorbacks 198.050-195.575. Nichols scored an average of 10.000.
Returning home to the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman, Oklahoma, the Sooners took down the Georgia Bulldogs 197.825-195.300.
Traveling to Chapel Hill, North Carolina, taking on the North Carolina Tar Heels and the Ball State Cardinals, the Sooners resulted in first place with a score of 197.000. North Carolina had 195.150 and Ball State with 193.600.
Ending January in the Metroplex Challenge taking place in Fort Worth, Texas including three other teams Arkansas, Denver, and Missouri, the Sooners once again finished in first place.
Beginning February with a couple of victories over the Florida Gators and the Denver Pioneers, the Sooners started the season undefeated and the current winning streak at six.
With the Perfect 10 Challenge hosted at the Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, the Sooners took another win over George Washington, the Arizona State Sun Devils, and the Washington Huskies.
Oklahoma conquered the West Virginia Mountaineers in Morgantown, West Virginia 197.150-195.350 to finish out February.
Defeating the UCLA Bruins 197.775-197.575, the Michigan Wolverines 198.200-197.425, the Iowa State Cyclones 197.575-196.275, and the Alabama Crimson Tide 198.275-197.250, the Sooners close out the regular season undefeated and set their sights on the Big 12 Championships.
The Sooners named Big 12 champions for the 11th time in the Kindler era taking down Denver, Iowa State, and West Virginia.
Placing first on Apr. 5-6, the Sooners claimed their 10th straight regional championship and are heading to the NCAA Championships for the 16th straight season.
With the NCAA Championships hosted in Fort Worth, Texas, the Sooners got the win at the NCAA Semifinal and are on their way to the NCAA Championship Finals.
Kindler and the Sooners secure their third National Title in four years with a score of 198.3375 and the runner-up LSU Tigers scoring 197.8250.
The Sooners ended the season with a perfect undefeated 17-0 record and as the 2019 National Champions.
