Oklahoma State head coach Kenny Gajewski knew the Cowgirl’s offense was going to be good, but the start so far this season even surprised him.
OSU has won 11 straight, with seven run-rules in these past weeks on the road. The offense racked up 49 runs this past weekend at the Troy Cox Classic.
“We have this I’m going to cut your throat out mentality, it’s suffocating.” Gajewski said in his press conference Thursday.
Rachel Becker, who was named to NFCA Third Team All-America last season, has been outstanding these first three weeks for the Cowgirls.
“Rachel Becker is an all-American, she’s for real,” Gajewski said.
Junior Katelynn Carwile credits Becker for the amazing start to the offense this season.
“Batting leadoff, she’s leading the team in batting average, and doing everything else,” Carwile said on Thursday.
Despite a change of teams this offseason, Becker has been a hitting machine for OSU. In the first three weeks, Becker has a .579 batting average, including 22 hits in 38 plate appearances.
Becker said the transition from Purdue to now a leadoff at Oklahoma State has been an easy one.
“It has gone better than I expected,” Becker said on Thursday. “Everybody on this team made it so easy to come in and immediately like a member of the team and be welcomed into the family.”
Freshman Tallen Edwards is the baby, foregoing her senior at Southmoore to come play this year for the Cowgirls, but that hasn’t stopped her from being a weapon in the offense.
Edwards has a .450 batting average, including 14 RBIs, four of those coming last weekend in the Troy Cox Classic.
Gajewski said it’s been amazing to see her achieve this much success at the start of the year.
“A kid who should be a senior in high school, to be hitting .450 is kind of wild,” Gajewski said. “She plays with no fear, and you see that.”
“She’s come here and acted like she’s been here for three years already,” Carwile said. “She doesn’t act like she shouldn’t be here.”
The Cowgirls have had fun these three weeks traveling to different places, but they are ready to play in front of the fans at Cowgirl stadium.
Oklahoma State is now at home for next two weekends, starting with the OSU/Tulsa Invitational on Friday.
“I think it’s really exciting not only for us but for our fans, I think we are going to have a really good crowd,” Carwile said about the home-opener. “I’m just so excited to play at home.”
“I just can’t wait for our fans here,” Gajewski said. “To get to watch some of these kids running around this field, it’s pretty cool to watch.
Oklahoma State opens home-slate on Friday, with Maine at 2:30 p.m. and Missouri at 5 p.m. The Missouri game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
