Eddy Pierre-Louis didn’t come to SEC Media Days as just one of the Sooners’ representatives. He arrived as one of their emerging leaders.
Pierre-Louis entered Oklahoma as a highly regarded prospect with the physical tools to contribute on the interior of the offensive line. Now, as he prepares for his third season in Norman, he has taken on a much larger leadership role within the offensive line room.
Sooners quarterback John Mateer said Pierre-Louis’ selection to represent Oklahoma at SEC Media Days reflects how far he has come.
“In that room, he’s done a great job. I’m not surprised he’s here. The intensity he brings every day, the wisdom, the knowledge, and he holds everybody accountable, just like what we need and we need a guy like that.”
Head coach Brent Venables has seen that same growth since Pierre-Louis first arrived in Norman.
“He’s an alpha… Eddy’s been somebody that has shown up in the facility from the day he got to Norman with tremendous gratitude… He brings out the best in his teammates. He’s willing to have honest conversations with his teammates. He’s a motivator… becoming a great player, a great leader is about elevating others, and Eddy’s done that as good as anybody in our facility.”
Pierre-Louis said that growth started by shifting his focus toward improving both himself and the players around him.
“It was really taking a really deep breath and thinking about myself and how I can improve my game and improve everybody else around me… worrying about the right stuff, like the right stuff is hands, eyes, and feet for basics, for the offensive line… bringing those guys along has been helping me as well, like be a better player and better person too.”
While Pierre-Louis has traditionally led by example, he said he’s become much more comfortable using his voice.
“I always haven’t been more of a vocal guy, more like a lead by example… But now I’m to the point where I can talk a lot more and be more vocal to my guys… a lot of people don’t know their potential. So you got to bring it out of them… bringing those guys and uplifting them has been a great thing.”
That leadership will be important for an Oklahoma offensive line looking to help revive the Sooners’ rushing attack.
Head coach Brent Venables has repeatedly emphasized improving Oklahoma’s run game, and Pierre-Louis said the offensive line understands exactly where it must improve.
“Sometimes you just got to hear the message and not the tone… we already know what we need to improve at… we needed to get better at the basics… pad level and strain to finish. You’ve got to be willing to dominate your opponent each and every play… We’ve got good running backs…
We got to hold our guys up and hold them tight like those defensive linemen and we can have explosive runs.”
Oklahoma’s schedule offers little margin for error, with Michigan, Georgia and Texas all appearing within the Sooners’ first five games. Pierre-Louis said the challenge has only reinforced the team’s approach.
“We know we got a tough schedule that’s coming up… but we’re taking one game at a time… UTEP is going to be the situation where we start the foundation for the whole season… being dominant throughout that first game and continuing that will help us be where we want to be.”
Returning to his hometown of Tampa for SEC Media Days made the experience even more meaningful.
“Being back in my hometown, Tampa, Florida. I was able to see my mom earlier… I’m quite honored. Representing my squad and also representing Oklahoma.”
The trip also served as a reminder of a dream Pierre-Louis has carried since childhood.
“Oklahoma was my dream school since I was a kid. I made a video to myself saying, like when I was seven, saying I was going to go to Oklahoma. And I’m blessed that I made that happen, for sure.”
Pierre-Louis said Baker Mayfield first drew him to Oklahoma, and he now sees many of those same qualities in quarterback John Mateer.
“The thing that I like about Baker is really the way he comes out. He has good passion, good energy. And that’s something that John Mateer has as well… Him having that good energy, good juice… has us all being able and ready to go run through a wall for him… that’s something that you need and what you want in your quarterback.”
Mateer also joked earlier in the day that Pierre-Louis’ truck is usually one of the last vehicles left in the parking lot each evening. Pierre-Louis said those extra hours are about setting the standard for the rest of the offensive line.
“Coming in each and every day… my guys, they look up to me… I’ve got to go harder for those guys, and I got to put myself aside. I can’t worry about me. I’ve got to worry about my group… Sometimes you can’t be thinking about yourself. You’ve got to think about what’s good for the team, what’s best for the team.”
