D&R OU Practice Report – Tuesday, August 29

Dave and Rives attended OU Head Coach Brent Venables press conference earlier this morning. As the week one depth chart dropped about an hour before the interview, there was plenty of pressing questions to ask.

Brent Venables was persistent with his terms today, mentioning the phrase “experience” a hand full of times. All you have to do is take a glance at the depth chart to see BV is not playing around when he talks about how important experience is.

A few names we did not foresee starting on the initial depth chart are Marcus Major and Justin Harrington. Harrington is one we should have seen coming, considering he was named a captain for week one. Coach Venables did stress that both Dasan McCullough and Justin Harrington have had tremendous springs, but it appears he is siding with the experience, at least for week one.

Marcus Major being named the starting RB for the 2023 Sooners did provide us some shock, however. While there is no doubting Major’s pure ability, it remains to be seen if he can string a full season together. Tawee Walker was listed above the sophomore tandem of Barnes and Sawchuck as well.

Though this is surprising, all of these backs are going to get carries. It’s a true “running back by committee” approach to the season. Rather than looking at Major and Walker so high up as a concern, it should rather be viewed as a testament to the tremendous depth this OU backfield will display this year.

We covered the rest of the depth chart and Coach Venables presser on youtube, which can be viewed here.
