Zack Sanchez has been placed on the Jim Thorpe Award watch list. The award goes to the best defensive back in the nation and handed out by the National College Football Awards Association (NCFAA) since 1986.
Sanchez’s inclusion comes after a year with a team-leading 6 interceptions and 43 total tackles. His play last season earned him First Team All-Big 12 honors. He has started all 26 games of his career and an anchor to Oklahoma’s returning secondary.
This is the third watch list Sanchez has been placed on. Earlier it was announced Sanchez was on both the Nagurski Trophy and Chuck Bednarik Award watch lists. Both awards go to the best defensive player of the year as voted on by their respective committees.
There are three other Big 12 selections to the watch list. Oklahoma State’s Kevin Peterson, Kansas State’s Dante Barnett, and West Virginia’s Karl Joseph also made the short list of 42.
