What a Press Conference Means

For those of you that listen to the OU weekly press conference meeting with Bob Stoops, there are many questions thrown in his direction.  Please allow me to be the translator for what actually goes through the mind of a coach.

BobQuestion: Are there any injuries you want to talk about?
Answer: No.
Translation: That’s really none of your, or anyone’s business.
Question: Are you concerned about your secondary heading into this week?
Answer: We are going work at getting better, and do things that are fundamentally sound.
Translation: I have no idea, we teach them what to do, but come on, they have to get it done.
Question: Who is your starting quarterback?
Answer: Right now all our guys are competing, and we’ll have to see who wins the job.
Translation: I know who I think it will be, but why would I tell you and give other teams a heads up.
Question: How do you feel about the SEC?
Answer: I really don’t want to talk about the SEC right now.
Translation: Did you see what Tech did to Arkansas?
Question: How do you feel about these early kickoffs?
Answer: I’d like them to be fair about scheduling, and make it easy for all teams.
Translation: We will play at anytime, but if it helps everyone to have the game later, I’m good with that.
Question: Do you feel that there is more pressure for you to win this year?
Answer: No
Translation: I’M TRYING TO BUILD A STADIUM HERE, WHAT DO YOU THINK?
As a coach there are things you have to answer with the company line.  Sometimes you need a person like me to say what you’re really thinking.
