After Buddy Hield graduated and moved on to the NBA, Oklahoma fans were immediately looking for the next “Buddy Buckets”. The push was made for Christian James last year, but he had a year he would like to erase. Even with how much James has improved, freshman phenom Trae Young has officially made his mark on the 2017-2018 season.
Young averaged over 42 points a game during his senior of year of high school basketball, and his transition to college could not have gone any smoother to this point. He entered today’s game against Oregon averaging 24.5 points per game. The freshman decided that his 33-point performance against Portland on Friday was not enough, as he exploded for 43 points against the Ducks today.
As Trae Young was early into his 21-point burst in the last 8:49 of the game, national media began to take notice. How good was Young against Oregon? Only Sooner great Wayman Tisdale has scored more points in a game before as a freshman. See what people had to say about Oklahoma’s freshman phenom:

Trae Young is a collegiate version of Steph Curry — seriously. Scored 43 as Oklahoma beats Oregon. Averaged 34.7 PPG in three games at the PK80. Flat. Out. Stud.

Trae Young drops 43 1) he’s a problem 2) Lon keeps his promise of letting him play 3) Trae made a smart decision going somewhere he gets to be himself

Oklahoma’s Trae Young is putting up outrageous numbers to start his career. Just had 43 points and seven assists to beat Oregon. Went for 33 points and eight assists on Friday.

Trae Young is a pretty serious NBA prospect despite the lack of size.

Trae Young is the real deal. What a stud.

Trae Young was a blast to cover in high school. Each game Young showed up no matter the opponent performing at a high level. He has moved up to the collegiate level seamlessly. The competition level has changed what has not changed, he continues to dominate opponents. #PrepHoops pic.twitter.com/IWSKfNJkMm
