Thunder Weekend Notes

Thunder Weekend Notes

With the less-than-a-year Carmelo Anthony era coming to an end, the Oklahoma City Thunder’s off season has hit the unofficial lull.

That hasn’t stopped Sam Presti from making — or not making — moves to give a closer glimpse as to what the roster and staff will look like once preseason begins in October. Here is a collection of nuggets that you may have missed this week:

Dakari Johnson/Abdel Nader Deal Aftermath

This new $1.38 million trade exception was used to guarantee Abdel Nader’s contract. Coming from the Boston Celtics, Nader’s contract was non-guaranteed. With Presti choosing not to waive Nader at the August 1st deadline, the newly acquired swing man is now a guaranteed member of the Thunder.

Oklahoma City still has the $11 million trade exception from the Atlanta trade and roughly $4.5 million left of their $5.3 million taxpayer mid-level exception — the difference of which was used in helping facilitate the signing Hamidou Diallo.

Nader provides versatility and another developmental wing player the Thunder love to stockpile. At the beginning of July, the Thunder only had one — Terrance Ferguson. In addition to Nader they also have Hamidou Diallo, Timothe Luwawu-Cabarrot and have the possibility of adding draft picks Kevin Hervey or Devon Hall to another two-way contract which leads us to…

P.J. Dozier Now a Boston Celtic

His jersey number will certainly be in the rafters of the Chesapeake Energy Arena someday, but the player is moving on. Dozier’s exit from Oklahoma City will allow the Thunder to sign another two-way contract to one of their remaining two second round draft picks.

OKC to Add Bob Beyer to Assistant Coach Position

Beyer has coached in the NBA as an assistant for 10 seasons. In addition to coaching with Detroit, he has worked with Toronto, Orlando, Golden State and Charlotte. Sooner and Cowboy basketball fans will be familiar with his exploits as a coach going back to 2001 when Beyer coached under Bob Knight at Texas Tech until 2004.

Thunder Players Workout in LA Together

Russell Westbrook, Paul George, Steven Adams, newly acquired Dennis Schroder, Terrance Ferguson, Hamidou Diallo and Deonte Burton worked out together in Los Angeles over the week. Westbrook was in town for his Why Not? Foundation basketball camp. This is the first we’ve seen Westbrook and other Thunder mainstays run with Schroder, Diallo and Burton.
