OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma City Thunder’s coaching staff experienced a shake up today as assistant coach Bob Beyer accepted a new role with the Sacramento Kings.
Beyer joins first-year head coach Luke Walton’s staff after one season with the Thunder. Oklahoma City’s defensive coach had come from Stan Van Gundy’s staff in Detroit from 2014 until 2018.
The Thunder experienced a growth in their overall defensive performance with Beyer. Oklahoma City jumped from ninth in 2017-18 to fourth in 2018-19.
The hire for Sacramento comes six weeks after Walton accepted the head coaching position. Walton was formerly the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers from 2016 until they mutually parted ways April 2019.
Donovan’s staff will return Maurice Cheeks, Darko Rajakovic, Bin Bhavnani, and Billy Schmidt. Long time assistant Mark Bryant is reportedly a top candidate for an assistant coaching position the Phoenix Suns and first-year head coach and former Thunder assistant Monty Williams.
