Oklahoma vs. Arizona
NCAA National Semifinal
The 1988 Oklahoma Sooners had reached their 3rd Final Four, but first in 41 years as they faced fellow #1 seed and West Regional champ, Arizona, with a spot in the National Championship on the line.
Both teams had their share of stars with the Sooners, being lead by Stacey King, Harvey Grant and Mookie Blaylock, and the Wildcats suiting up the likes of Sean Elliot, Steve Kerr and Tom Tolbert.
It was a much-anticipated match-up that certainly didn’t disappoint for Sooner fans.
After trailing early, 9-2, Oklahoma’s run and gun, trapping and pressing style served them well going on a 34-13 run and an eventual 39-27 halftime lead.
Every second half effort by Arizona was only met with tough defense and trips to the free throw line for the Sooners who held off the Wildcats, 86-78, and earned a spot in the title game.
Stacy King and Harvey Grant both finished with 21 points for the Sooners while the Wildcats were backed by an impressive 31 from Sean Elliot.
