Reports: Dolphins zero in on Patriots’ Brian Flores, not Cowboys’ Kris Richard, in search for new head coach

Update, 4 p.m. Friday: The Miami Dolphins have reportedly zeroed in on their next head coach, and it’s not Kris Richard.

Richard, the Cowboys’ defensive backs coach and defensive passing game coordinator, interviewed last Sunday for the Miami Dolphins, New York Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coaching jobs.

The Jets and Buccaneers have already filled those positions.

According to multiple reports, Miami is focused on Patriots defensive play-caller Brian Flores as its new head coach.

The Jets hired former Dolphins head coach Adam Gase and the Buccaneers hired former Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians.

“He’s as good of a football coach as I’ve been around,” Cowboys linebacker Sean Lee said of Richard on Thursday. “The type of knowledge that he has, the motivator he is. He can teach Xs and Os, he can teach techniques, he relates to guys. To me, he’s a perfect head coach. He’s had a huge impact on this group.”

Cowboys offensive coordinator Scott Linehan was head coach of the St. Louis Rams between 2006 and 2008. Linehan said this week that he believes Richard is going to be a “fabulous head coach.”
