Rangers Win Series Against Cubs To Open 2019 Season

The Texas Rangers, 2-1 overall, lost on Opening Day 12-4. Shortstop Elvis Andrus led the offense with a three-hit game, including a two-run home run. Also, right fielder Nomar Mazara hit a two-run home run. Starter Mike Minor allowed six runs and struck out three in 4 2/3 innings to earn the loss.
Texas beat the Chicago Cubs, 1-2, in game two. Left fielder Joey Gallo hit a three-run home run and third baseman Asdrúbal Cabrera got three hits, including a two-run home run. Starter Edinson Vólquez outdueled former Ranger Yu Darvish with three strikeouts and four runs allowed during four innings. Then, reliever Shawn Kelley earned the win after a four-out shutout outing and closer Jose Leclerc earned the save with a shutout ninth inning.
The Rangers won the series on a walk-off wild pitch, which allowed Gallo to score, in the series finale. Texas hit three home runs, including center fielder Delino DeShields’ grand slam. Starter Lance Lynn allowed seven runs and struck out five in 5 2/3 innings. Then, Leclerc earned the win because of the walk-off.
Texas will finish a six-game homestand with a three-game series against the Houston Astros, 1-3, at Globe Life Park.
