Rangers Take Series Win In Houston; Colon Close To Perfect Game In Series Finale

The Texas Rangers (4-10) won two of three against the Houston Astros (10-6) at Minute Maid Park.


Left fielder Joey Gallo and catcher Robinson Chirinos each hit solo home runs, Gallo’s fourth and Chirinos’ first, in the seventh inning of the series opener. Texas lost 3-2.


Lefty Cole Hamels pitched six innings of two-run ball, which included two walks and seven strikeouts. Then, righty Chris Martin pitched a scoreless eighth before righty Kevin Jepsen allowed an unearned run in a one-out appearance. Finally, lefty Jake Diekman concluded the Ranger’s pitching efforts in game one with a scoreless two-out appearance.


Second baseman Isiah Kiner-Falefa hit his first-career home run, a solo shot, in the fifth before third baseman Adrian Beltre hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot, in the sixth. Two innings later, Gallo hit a solo home run, his fifth, before first baseman Ronald Guzman hit his first-career home run, a solo shot. Finally, Guzman hit a RBI single in the 10th. Texas won 6-5.


Lefty Mike Minor allowed five runs in five innings before relievers Tony Barnette, Matt Bush, Keone Kela, Martin and lefty Alex Claudio combined for five scoreless innings.


Chirinos hit a solo home run, his second, in the third before he hit a two-run double, his third, in the 10th.


Starter Bartolo Colon carried a perfect game into the eighth innings before he allowed a walk and a double. Colon was removed after 7 2/3 innings, which included a run to score, a walk and seven strikeouts. Claudio finished the eighth before Kela earned his second win with a scoreless ninth. Finally, Diekman earned his first save of the season with a scoreless, one-strikeouts 10th.


Texas will travel to Tropicana Field for a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays (3-12) to finish a six-game road trip.
