The Oakland Athletics (87-57) swept the Texas Rangers (61-82) in a three-game series at the Oakland Coliseum.
Left fielder Joey Gallo started the Ranger’s offense in the fourth inning of the series opener with a two-run home run, his 35th. Three innings later, first baseman Ronald Guzman hit a RBI double, his 16th, before Gallo hit a RBI double, his 22nd, in the eighth. Texas lost 8-4.
Starter Yovani Gallardo allowed five runs, five walks and struck out three in 4 1/3 innings. Then, the bullpen allowed three runs, two earned, two walks and struck out five in 3 2/3 innings.
Designated hitter Adrian Beltre hit a solo home run, his 11th, in the second of game two. Then, right fielder Nomar Mazara hit a two-run double, his 22nd, in the third before third baseman Jurickson Profar hit a solo home run, his 16th, in the fourth. Finally, Beltre finished game two with a two-run home run, his 12th, in the eighth. Texas lost 8-6.
Lefty Yohander Méndez allowed two runs, three walks and struck out three in four innings. Then, the bullpen allowed six runs, three walks and struck out four in four innings.
Mazara started the series finale with driving in a run with a sacrifice fly in the first before second baseman Rougned Odor and Beltre each hit RBI singles in the third. Texas lost 7-3.
Five pitchers combined allowed six runs, two walks and struck out six in eight innings.
Texas will continue its nine-game road trip with a three-game series against the Los Angeles Angels (71-72) at Angel Stadium.
