The three-seed Oklahoma Sooners (36-22) won 20-10 against the two-seed Mississippi State Bulldogs (31-26) in the NCAA Tallahassee Regional at Dick Howser Stadium in Tallahassee, Florida.
Catcher Justin Mitchell started OU’s offense with a RBI single in the first inning. Later in the inning, second baseman Kyle Mendenhall hit a RBI double before two runs scored on a groundout and a throwing error. Shortstop Brandon Zaragoza hit a RBI single in the second before two runs scored in the fourth from Mitchell’s RBI single and Mendenhall’s sacrifice fly. Left fielder Blake Brewster started a nine-run seventh with a RBI single. Later in the inning, center fielder Cade Harris hit a two-run single before Zaragoza hit a two-run single. The rally continued with Mendenhall’s RBI single, which scored two runs because of a throwing error. The nine-run inning finished with designated hitter Thomas Hughes’ RBI single and Brewster’s RBI walk. In the ninth, Brewster, Harris and Zaragoza hit RBI doubles before third baseman Brylie Ware hit a RBI groundout.
Ace Jake Irvin allowed eight runs, seven earned, walked four and struck out six in 3 1/3 innings before four relievers combined for two runs allowed, three walks and one strikeout.
OU will face the four-seed the Samford Bulldogs (37-24) today in the NCAA Tallahassee Regional at Dick Howser Stadium in Tallahassee, Florida, at 4 p.m.
