The Oklahoma Sooners (34-21) lost two of three against the Kansas Jayhawks (25-28) over the weekend at Hoglund Ballpark in Lawrence, Kansas.
Right fielder Steele Walker hit a solo home run in the third inning of the series opener. In the ninth, left fielder Cade Harris hit a RBI double before Walker hit a three-run home run in the ninth. OU lost 6-5 in 10 innings.
Starter Jake Irvin pitched seven innings of one-run ball, which included two walks and nine strikeouts. Then, three relievers followed Irvin’s start, including closer Austin Hansen, who allowed four runs in the ninth.
Center fielder Kyler Murray started game two with a RBI triple before second baseman Kyle Mendenhall hit a two-run triple in the first. In the next inning, first baseman Cade Cavalli hit a solo home run before Murray hit one of his own in the third. OU lost 6-5.
Starter Levi Prater allowed six runs in three innings before three relievers combined for five scoreless innings, zero walks and six strikeouts.
Mendenhall hit a RBI double in the second of the series finale before he scored on a passed ball. In the third, third baseman Brylie Ware hit a three-run home run before catcher Justin Mitchell hit a RBI double. Later in the inning, Cavalli hit a three-run home run to finish the seven-run third. Three innings later, Harris hit a solo home run. In the eighth, designated hitter Tyler Hardman hit a solo home run before Ware hit a three-run double. OU won 14-6.
Starter Nathan Wiles pitched seven innings, allowed six runs, walked two and struck out six. Then, three relievers combined for two scoreless innings.
This series concludes the regular season for OU. Its next game will be Wednesday at 9 a.m. against the Baylor Bears (32-19) in the Big XII Championship, which takes place at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, home of the Oklahoma City Dodgers, in Oklahoma City.
