Sunday in our beautiful city, two things that this city loves will be on display at Taft Stadium, playoffs and proper football, as OKC Energy FC host the Colorado Springs Switchbacks in the 2nd round of the USL’s Western Conference playoffs. The Energy grabbed the #2 seed in the West, a first round bye, and a home match in the second round. The opponent is one that the Energy have history with, and recent history at that. Most that follow OKC will tell you that the best match of the season was 3 weekends ago at Taft, a 3-3 draw with the Switchbacks, a match in which Colorado Springs drew level on a controversial penalty kick in the final minutes.
The two teams are familiar off the pitch, as well. Colorado Springs goalie Samir Badr spent last season in OKC, but the most intriguing familiarity is between siblings, OKC’s Daniel Gonzalez and his older brother, Colorado Springs’ Miguel Gonzalez.
The best news for OKC is possibly in the other Western Conference semifinal matchup, as the top seeded OC Blues did not have their stadium available for this weekend and will have to go on the road to take on the #5 seed LA Galaxy II. This means that if the home teams both win, OKC will host the Western Conference finals next weekend at Taft.
But for now, the motto is simple for OKC. There are no more draws. There can be no more poor performances. When the ball kicks off at 6 pm this Sunday, the goal is clear. Just win, baby.
