The senior member of The Franchise talk host team is long-time Oklahoma broadcaster David Garrett.
Garrett is celebrating his 42nd year in the radio industry, having started as a disc jockey at age 15 at KHEN-AM-FM in his home town of Henryetta, OK. He is also currently UCO football’s radio play-by-play announcer, a position held since 2007.
He began his play-by-play career at age 16 while attending Henryetta High School and through the years has been on broadcasts of state college games in various sports for Oklahoma University, Oklahoma State, Oral Roberts. Garrett has also worked for the University of New Orleans and University of Texas, in addition to working with the Oklahoma City RedHawks in 2003 and doing dozens of high school championships and all-star games.
His first work in sportstalk was at KSPI-AM-FM in Stillwater in 1979, then KTOK-AM in Oklahoma City in 1987, and has hosted shows at WQUE in New Orleans, KRLD in Dallas, KTBZ in Tulsa, KREF in Norman, and KGHM in Oklahoma City, before joining The Franchise.
Garrett served as the voice of the New Orleans Saints in 1992 and ‘93, and the Dallas Cowboys in 1995, ’96 and ‘97. He won the 1996 KATIE Award from the Dallas Press Club, given to the top play-by-play broadcaster in the Southwest, for his radio call of the Dallas Cowboys’ 27-17 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XXX.
David has won the Outstanding Achievement Award for Play-by-play/Large Market from the Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters for his UCO football broadcasts in 2008, ’09, and ’10, and has several AP state awards for sportscasts from the 1980’s.
He was a radio-TV major at Oklahoma State 1978-83.
David is married (Rajeana) and has two daughters (Allison and Alicia).
