Kyler Murray Drafted 9th Overall by Oakland A’s

Oklahoma quarterback and outfielder Kyler Murray was selected 9th overall by the Oakland Athletics in the 2018 MLB First-Year Player Draft. Many fans and experts expected Murray to be drafted in the MLB draft, potentially even as high as the first round or in the compensatory round. Not many expected Kyler Murray to be a top-10 pick this year because of his likely commitment to play football for the Sooners this fall.

The Oakland A’s took a chance on the 5’10” 190lb Redshirt Sophomore. Murray in his second season on the diamond for OU showed great signs of improvement, spending most of the season batting clean-up for 1st year Head Coach Skip Johnson. Murray started 50 games and had a slash line of .296/.398/.556 with 10 home runs and 47 rbi.

MLB Pipeline had Murray ranked as the 36th top prospect in this years draft class, thanks in large part to his elite athleticism that will provide plus-plus speed on the baseball field. College football fans have seen Murray blow past plenty of defenders while in pads, so undoubtedly the Oakland scouts were drooling over what he could do on the base-paths and patrolling the outfield in Oakland Alameda Coliseum.

Kyler was a highly touted baseball prospect coming out of Allen High School in Texas, even being ranked as high as 34th on’s Top 100 Draft Prospects list. Murray would opt out of the 2015 MLB Draft to pursue an athletic career at Texas A&M where he would play football and baseball. He also led Allen HS to 3 Texas state titles and had an impressive 42-0 record while quarterbacking the Eagles. In those three seasons, Murray passed for 10,386 yards and 117 touchdowns while rushing for 4,129 yards and 69 more scores.

The Athletics have a bonus pool totaling $9,553,200, which they can spread out how they please among all of their drafted players. The assigned value for the 9th overall pick in the 2018 draft is $4,761,500 – but Oakland can choose to offer Murray less than the assigned value and re-purpose the money saved towards other draftees.

“On the night before the Draft, word began to circulate within the industry that for the right price, Murray would agree to focus on baseball after playing football this fall for the Sooners. If true, he could command a bonus of $3 million or more.” – Jim Callis Baseball America

Sooner football Head Coach Lincoln Riley has seemed confident that Murray would be playing football for one more season at Oklahoma:

Kyler Murray has not confirmed his intentions yet but let us all marvel at what he has done during his time in Norman and what he could possibly do in the future.
