Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones joined “Adam Schefter’s Know Them from Adam” podcast [in early January] on ESPN to talk about everything from his grandson’s state title run to financial advice his father game him as a college student. Here are some highlights:

Adam Schefter: What would your dad say today if he knew your franchise was worth over $4 billion?

Jerry Jones: “Well my father used to ride along with me when I was in college and coach me up on how to sell insurance. And the way he coached me to sell life insurance, and this is when I was a freshman and a sophomore and junior in school, I’d ride with him in the car and it would be talking about financial things, talking about the size of companies. And I would say, ‘Well, that’s a million dollars.’ And he would stop me.

“He’d say, ‘Jerry, don’t ever say a million dollars. Honor it! Let it roooooollllll off your tongue. Really emphasize it. One mmmilllllllion dollars.’

“And so he had played a big role. I do not know how much time and how much he would want me to emphasize some of the numbers that have come out about the value of sports entities today. But I’ll assure you it’d take several minutes to get it out.

“He called me. I’d committed to buying the Cowboys for about a month and he called me. And he said, ‘Jerry, I had no idea.’ We were talking but he said [he] just didn’t have any idea about the visibility, about the critique [and] the criticism. I made quite a…
