For the third straight year, the quarterback of the Oklahoma Sooners has been named the Big 12 Male Athlete of the Year.
Jalen Hurts brought home the award this year following the footsteps of Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray before him, after he finished Heisman Runner-Up and led the Sooners to another Big 12 title and back to the College Football Playoff.
Hurts threw for over 3800 yards last season with 32 touchdowns, and had an insane 1298 yards and 20 touchdowns on the ground.
In addition to being the third straight Sooner QB to win the award, he is also the sixth overall, as Sam Bradford, Jason White, and Josh Heupel all also took it home in their tenures in Norman.
Buddy Hield won the award in 2016 as well, making this four straight years of Sooners on the male side.
Maggie Nichols of OU Gymnastics won the Female Big 12 Athlete of the Year, making it an OU sweep for the third time in the last four years (Mayfield/Nichols in 2018, Hield/Paige Parker in 2017).
Nichols makes it the sixth time Oklahoma has won the female athlete of the year, and her second to go along with Parker, Lauren Chamberlain (2015). Keilani Ricketts (2013), and Stacey Dales (2002).
