Draft Smart – 2017 Fantasy Breakouts and Busts

With the last week of preseason upon us, Fantasy Football drafts are in full swing, and for some, this last week will help determine teams all across the country.

Preseason football has its good moments and its bad moments, like seeing young players make a difference, or seeing stars play and getting seriously injured. This preseason has been no different.

One player expected to have a good fantasy season was Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman. Last year, he was the beneficiary of Gronk’s absence, leading the Patriots in receptions with 98, 43 more than the next highest, and yards with just over 1100. His production was sure to decrease this year with the offseason addition of Brandin Cooks and the return of Gronk, but Edelman’s normal draft position was sitting at around 60, making him a strong play at WR2 or Flex. With him being out for the season, watch for Chris Hogan to step up as the Patriots WR3.

Another player who went down in week 3 is Chiefs running back Spencer Ware, who tore his PCL. Last season, like the past few, the Chiefs relied on a new back to step up in the absence of Jamaal Charles, and did just that, finishing with nearly 1000 yards. In 2017, Charles is gone and Ware looked to lock up the RB1 spot for the Chiefs. With Ware out, the chiefs will rely even more on Tyreek Hill, who took the league by storm as a returner, runner and receiver.

Two teams have running backs looking to benefit from QB turmoil, the Jaguars and the Browns. With Blake Bortles and Chad Henne both struggling to find a rhythm in the preseason, Leonard Fournette(ADP 25) will look to start the season carrying the load for the Offense. The Jaguars have a group of wideouts in Allen Robinson, Allen Hurns, Marquis Lee and now Dede Westbrook, but without a reliable option at QB, Fournette will have all the chances at the goal line. The Browns decided that rookie QB Deshone Kizer would be manning the helm, making Isaiah Crowell a breakout candidate in 2017. The Browns added depth to the Offensive Line, and will be making holes for Crowell all season.

Other breakout candidates for 2017

  • Ty Montgomery – Green Bay Packers
  • Martavis Bryant- Pittsburgh Steelers
  • Ameer Abdullah – Detroit Lions
  • Paul Perkins – New York Giants
  • Pierre Garcon – San Francisco 49ers

Players to avoid in 2017

  • Eddie Lacy – Seattle Seahawks
  • Brandon Marshall – New York Giants
  • Sammy Watkins – Los Angeles Rams
  • Donte Moncrief – Indianapolis Colts
  • Jarvis Landry – Miami Dolphins
