Cotton Bowl Catastrophe

Cotton Bowl Catastrophe

The first half told the story. Texas, 1-4 Texas, jumped all over the Sooners early.

Completely outplayed. Completely outclassed.
Completely surprising.

Texas beat Oklahoma 24-17 Saturday in the Cotton Bowl, where the Horns were supposed to rollover and play dead against the Sooners, who came in as a 17-point favorite.

Instead, an underdog Texas team beat a heavily favored Oklahoma squad for the second time in three years.

The Sooners made a run at Texas in the second half, but the staggering Longhorns stayed on their feet and scored a huge victory over the Sooners.

One of the worst losses of Bob Stoops’ career.

How can this team not go to Dallas and beat a UT team that was in total disarray?

Let me count the ways.

OFFENSIVE LINE.  The Sooners pass protection was downright pathetic. Baker Mayfield had little time to throw the ball. And the much-maligned Texas defense kept Mayfield inside the pocket most of the day.

Coming into the game, this was a historically bad Longhorn defense, and the Sooners could only muster 17 points.

TCU had 30 in a quarter last week.

PLAY CALLING. Lincoln Riley needed to roll or sprint Mayfield out more to buy him some more time. Didn’t see that happen enough. Sometimes you just have to realize your offensive line can’t get the job done.

FIRST HALF DESIRE. The humbled Horns came out with
more desire early in the opening half. See the Marcus Johnson 24 yard TD reception for UT’s first score. Lack of effort, poor tackling, big example of Texas wanting it more.

Oklahoma isn’t a great football team, but a good, focused team comes out a steps on Texas’ throat (TCU) and never gives this UT squad a chance to sniff confidence.

Instead, Texas got a much needed dose and carried it the rest of the way to the upset.

COTTON BOWL COLLAPSE. It was the perfect recipe for an underdog upset. All the ingredients were there. Favored team not focused early, Texas experiences early success, UT crowd gets into the game, Sooners rally falls short.

Ballgame.

You think Bevo feels sick? How about Bob Stoops?

His team was fortunate to win last season. Does OU think it owns the Cotton Bowl? Can’t think that way in this series.

Stoops just handed Charlie Strong a lifeline. And the Golden Hat Trophy.

In reality, Texas earned it.
