“Bizarro Bedlam” coming?

Mike Gundy is sporting a mullet. Bob Stoops has been cracking more jokes with the media. Rick is the new wimp on “The Walking Dead,” the Cubs won the World Series, and Donald Trump is about to be President.

Surely this all adds up to one thing, Bizarro Bedlam.

We’ve seen it before. Some crazy play decides Bedlam, leaving the winners celebrating for a year, and the losers wondering “how in the world did that just happen?”

Case in point, 1983.

The Sooners looked like they were finished until a late onside kick bounced off the face mask of OSU’s Chris Rockins. OU recovered, and thanks to a few big plays by the late Derrick Shepard (Sterling’s daddy) came back to win in Stillwater, 21-20. Tim Lashar kicked a 46-yard field goal to win it. OU had trailed by 17 points with 10 minutes remaining.

Case in point, 2001.

Les Miles’ OSU squad was a huge underdog in Norman, but when Rashaun Woods caught a late touchdown pass from Josh Fields, the Cowboys stunned the Sooners, 16-14, and ended OU’s Rose Bowl hopes.

Case in point, 1988.

Forever known as the “Brent Parker dropped the ball” game, but OSU was forced to thrown into the end zone after a bizarre taunting call on fullback Garrett Limbrick set up a 4th-and-16 from the OU 35-yard line. Still, Mike Gundy’s pass was in Parker’s hands, and dropped.
The Sooners survived to win 31-28. The bizarre final sequence overshadowed two great rushing performances by Barry Sanders and Mike Gaddis, who each had over 200 yards.

Case in point: 2014.

The Sooners appeared to have the game won, until Bob Stoops decided to punt a second time to Tyreek Hill, who returned it 92 yards for a touchdown to tie the game at 35 in the final minute. The Cowboys went on to win the game in overtime, 38-35, capping a wild week that featured an angry Gundy press conference the previous Monday that seemed to take the pressure off his team. The win also sent to the Cowboys to the Cactus Bowl, where it won against Washington, 30-22.

Will 2016 produce another crazy finish? It’s possible. Some strange things have happened recently. And the show “Stranger Things” was just a huge binge hit on Netflix.

After all, it’s Bedlam!
