Big 12 Baseball Power Rankings: Early March Edition

College baseball is two weeks in to the 2017 season, and the Big 12 has a couple of surprises. When you look at expectations for the conference in 2017 it doesn’t get much higher than preseason no. 1 TCU. While the Frogs have gone about the business of winning this season others have been pleasant surprises. 

Let’s start with the biggest surprise of them all for the first Big 12 power poll:

Baylor (9-0) RPI #2

 The Bears have started the season red hot going 9-0 with seven wins over top 64 ranked RPI schools. Baylor will get a bigger test this week when they play Ole Miss and Texas A&M in the Shriners Hospital Classic. 

TCU (7-1) RPI #30  

TCU comes into the weekend wining four straight over Arizona St and Rice. The Frogs will try and show why they were the preseason number 1 team when they take on LSU and Ole Miss in the Shriners Hospital Classic.

Texas Tech (9-1) RPI #26

Tech returned their entire starting rotation from 2016 that made it to Omaha. The Red Raiders started ’17 just as hot splitting two games opening weekend at Mississippi St. This week Tech will also be at the Shriners Hospital Classic taking on Texas A&M and LSU.

Kansas St (6-2) RPI #19

Next to Baylor, the Wildcats have to be the biggest shock so far in ’17. Kansas State is coming of three straight losing seasons, they might have the best win for the conference so far with a  6-3 at South Carolina. The Wildcats finally get to play at home this weekend hosting Eastern Illinois. 

West Virginia (6-2) RPI #9

West Virginia comes into ’17 on a mission after getting hot at the end of last season, most felt they just missed a NCAA bid. This year the Mountaineers are trying to eliminate the debate in early June as to weather or not they belong in the post season already having two wins over defending champs Costal Carolina. 

Texas (7-3) RPI #79

First year coach David Pierce has the ‘Horns off to a fast start. Texas has payed a schedule with several quality teams with a total five wins vs Rice and Stanford. The ‘Horns finish off the weekend with three more at Stanford. 

Oklahoma (9-1) RPI 113

The Sooners enter ’17 having missed 3 straight regionals for the first time in over 30 years. The Sooners have a front-loaded soft schedule, and have taken full advantage with. Central Connecticut State coming to Norman this weekend, and Tuesday’s game versus Wichita St. should be the best test in the 19 game home stand for the Sooners.

Oklahoma State (4-4) RPI 207

The Cowboys enter this season coming off a trip to Omaha, and three quality arms returning. Oklahoma St has been a little Jeckyll and Hyde team so far this season dropping 2 of 3 vs Grand Canyon before thumping Arizona St. The Cowboys have a chance to prove what type of team the are this weekend at the Frisco Classic vs Nebraska, Arizona & Arkansas. 

Kansas (2-6) RPI 168

 The Jayhawks have continued to struggle to start this season dropping the last four games. Kansas is in the middle of a 7 game home stand hosting Northwestern St. this weekend.
